The written history of Luxembourg starts in 963, when count Siegfried had a castle built on the territory of the present-day city. This castle was later was to develop into a formidable fortress whose remnants are included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Today the City of Luxembourg is the economic and cultural capital of the Greater Region (including Saarland and Lorraine) with some 11 million inhabitants. The City is one of
the top international financial centers and attracts some 120.000 commuters daily, who work in banking and finance, telecommunications and various other services.

Luxembourg is a founding member of the EU, and has welcomed the first European institutions in 1953. Today Luxembourg City hosts - amongst others - the Court of Justice
of the European Communities, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament and the European Investment Bank.
