Amsterdam From its humble beginnings as a 13th century fishing village on the river Amstel via the golden age of the 17th century in which the Dutch sailed the seas and Amsterdam became the financial centre of the world, our city has flourished. That prosperity enabled the city to build its concentric city centre with the canals and city hall (now the Royal Palace in Amsterdam) at Dam Square, while Rembrandt worked on his paintings. Nowadays Amsterdam is still famous for its trading spirit, creativity and tolerant character. Throughout its history the city benefited from the influx of migrants. Amsterdam is a lively and diverse city and is now home to inhabitants from some 174 countries.TEST.
