Prague

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is an absolutely unique historical metropolis occupying (not only owing to its abundant monuments) a prominent position among European cities. The historical centre of the city is the most significant monument reserve in the Czech Republic. In 1992 Prague’s 866-hectare historical core was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This year, the city is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its listing.

Prague is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe, both with regards to its scenic environment and its individual buildings. Within the monument reserve alone, there are more than 28 national monuments and nearly 1,400 cultural monuments. The city as a whole is home to almost 2,500 significant historical buildings protected by the state.

Prague’s historical core represents an intact organic municipal development spanning more than 1,000 years. Evidence of urban and architectural development from the Middle Ages up to the present day can be found at every turn. Attaining a balance between the city’s development and preservation of its urban, architectural and cultural values is one of the biggest challenges of the present time.
