Nicosia

Nicosia

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus since the 11th century, is a city rich in history and culture. In the 16th century the Venetians granted the city its trademark star-shaped city walls, which separate the Old City ‘within the walls’, from the modern and continuously developing Nicosia.

The heart of Nicosia is a treasure trove of monuments that bear witness to a roller coaster of changing civilizations - Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and British.

Today Nicosia is a modern, cosmopolitan capital and the administrative and commercial centre of Cyprus. Sadly, Nicosia bears the vivid marks of the division of the island and the physical separation of its Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot inhabitants, remaining the last divided capital in Europe.

Despite the political problems, unrelenting efforts are directed towards the revival of the inner city, in anticipation of reunification.
