Brussels

 Brussels

Brussels came into existence between the 7th and 10th centuries around a small harbour on the river Senne, a chapel consecrated to Saint Michael and a fortress. From the 12th century on, the town was linked to the important commercial road between Cologne and Bruges.

The phenomenal population growth during the 19th century, due to its attraction as an industrial and administrative centre, required the extension of the city. Important public works such as the new railway infrastructure, the vaulting of the river Senne and the construction of the central boulevards, make Brussels one of the major European cities.

As the 20th century progresses, the service-industry becomes a more and more important part of the capital’s economy. During the Universal Exposition of 1958 (Atomium), Brussels became the main seat of the European institutions which gives it an international aura. After the transformation of Belgium into a federal state, Brussels became the capital of Flanders, of the French speaking Community and also the heart of the new central region of the country called ‘Brussels-Capital region’.
